Tips For Starting A Fashion Blog On WordPress

Starting up and maintaining a fashion blog is something that I have a lot of experience with. I personally own three different fashion blogs on WordPress and I’ve been the editor and manager of one very big blog for over 7 years. My oldest blog that I own, Raindrops of Sapphire, is 4.5 years old, this blog, The Fashion Supernova is just over 2 years old and I recently setup a new one, The Jeans Blog, earlier this year in June.

Over the years I have developed a vast knowledge of blogging tips, skills and general rules and knowledge that you need to know in order to maintain and grow a fashion blog as a business, using WordPress. Many others out there love Blogger or Tumblr, but I started out on WordPress and have stuck to it ever since as it’s extremely easy to use, has amazing plugins and themes and is straight forward. Others are probably just as good, but my knowledge lies with WordPress so that’s why I have decided to cover some great tips for you to help you on your way to creating a successful fashion blog.

General Setup

Setting up a WordPress blog is easy, you can either have a free blog which will be hosted on and give you a URL like or you can pay to host your own, which also allows you to host sponsored content and accept adverts and affiliates. Using a free WordPress blog is ideal for beginners as it helps get them used to working with a fashion blog, but you can’t make money from it, so when you want to start accepting ads and sponsorships from brands, you will need to go self hosted. This is really easy and just requires you to find a great host in your area that offers the WordPress platform. They should be able to help get you setup or help you migrate from free WordPress over to the self hosted as well. I’m self hosted on all of my blogs as they are my business, so I need to be in order to make money. It’s a shame free WordPress doesn’t allow ads though!

Theme and Design

One amazing thing about WordPress is that you can choose so many different themes. You can preview how they look before you set them live and you can also customize them to however you want, using the built in theme custom builder or by knowing HTML so you can code the files of the theme. I’s important to have a very clear, clean, minimal design that is striking at the same time and it’s best to have everything in alignment, symmetrical and easy on the eye. This creates a really professional looking layout for your blog and it lets people know you are serious about what you do. You only have to look at the likes of Kayture, Song of Style, Viva Luxury etc to know how important a clean and sleek theme is! You also want the layout to be personal to you, something that represents your personality or style to make it stand out from the rest, this can be in the form of a creative banner or just some fancy text as your logo. Most WordPress themes are free, however if you fancy something a little more upmarket, you can pay for professional ones or even have someone create one from scratch for you.

Photos and Images

I’m sure you have noticed a recurring theme when it comes to top fashion bloggers, they all have amazing photos. This means that quality of them, the colour, the editing, the clarity etc is all professional and edited to perfection, creating a similar look to magazine photos. This is also very important as a fashion blog is 95% visual, so if your images just don’t cut it, people might not come back to visit your site. It’s important to invest in a good quality camera, an DSLR is recommended, and learn how to use Photoshop. You also want to try and have your photos a minimum of 650 pixels wide as small ones are often off putting. Be sure to re-size the size of the photo too, uploading photos which are over 600kb in size can make your website load really slowly.

Plugins and Widgets

Now these are the add ons that you want when creating your perfect theme. Plugins allow you to use so many cool features for your blog. For example, Akismet controls spam comments, Jetpack allows you to track traffic and use so many basic features, you can add popular posts to your side bar as well as images, affiliate ads, snow on your screen and more. There is literally a plugin for everything you can think of and it makes your life a whole lot easier! You want to make sure you always keep them updated though as older versions can become vulnerable, and you don’t want to overload on them either, so be sure to select the ones you need and will use.

Content and Posts

Content is the key point for having a successful blog. Your content needs to be unique, interesting, different and visually appealing as well as read well. You need to make sure your text is Google friendly by learning SEO skills, you need to make sure everything is set out clearly and readable, no spelling or grammar errors and of course you need to have interesting content. It’s no use redoing things that have already been done a million times before, you need to have a unique approach as it will keep your readers interested!
