Men’s Street Style Staples

The degree to which street style has inspired mainstream fashion over the last decade or so is immeasurable. Large fashion houses as well as fast fashion companies have embraced what’s happening in the streets, which is to say, what common people are wearing. While this isn’t anything particularly new, it’s the degree to which these companies are inspired that is the impressive part. Living in the digital age that we do, the amount of media that gets given to people on the street (think guys like Nick Wooster or Lapo Elkann) has only grown over the last decade.

The beauty of street style is that it’s constantly changing and there isn’t the wait for emerging trends that you traditionally see. At this moment one of fashion’s greatest trend setters, on the street and in the traditional sense, is Kanye West. Yes, a divisive figure, but a real fashion icon nonetheless. There’s things he’s been doing for a few years now that have influenced how men dress immensely. Now not everything Kanye wears should be emulated, or even attempted, but there are a few things he does, a few key items, that can be adopted to work with any man’s style.

Today we’ll discuss three street style staples that any man can bring into his wardrobe, provided he wear them with the requisite confidence and flair. With that in mind, here are three street style staples that all men should be adding to their closets.

Tech Sneakers

Again using Kanye as our muse here, I’m sure everyone out there has heard of the highly coveted “Yeezys” from Adidas. While the Yeezys are a truly fantastic sneaker, there’s two reasons why they’re not for everyone- they’re hard to find, and when they are they’re incredibly expensive (you’re looking at four figures). If you can afford them, all the power to you.

For the rest of us, we need to look at less expensive options. Luckily, there are a great number of tech sneakers out there from almost every major label. From Nike you can get into any number of their Free collection, but my favourites are the Huarache and the Hypervenom. From Adidas, anything from their Tubular collection or any pair of Boosts are an excellent option as well.

If you’re wary of buying into this trend, you can always tread lightly with a simple colourway. A lot of these sneakers come in all black or all white, or some combination of the two. These will be easy to wear with almost anything in your wardrobe. Lastly, be sure to pair these with a pant that has a very narrow hem. They tend to look funny when worn with a wider, or full-legged pant.

Sweatshirt

The sweatshirt has become the go-to casual item for a lot of men on the street. Why? Well, it’s certainly comfortable and there are a lot of labels now doing them in a range of fits and styles. You can find them trim or oversized, plain or patterned; whatever floats your boat, really. With the rise of what’s known as “athleisure,” (which is athletic gear as leisure wear if the name didn’t give it away), a lot of things one previously wore exclusively inside their own home is now acceptable practice outside your doors.

How you wear a sweatshirt is up to you. There aren’t too many rules around how it should fit or what colours or patterns you choose to wear. Be comfortable, and ensure that it works as a fine layering piece; the rest is completely up to you.

Attitude

A lot of the trends taking place in street style are ephemeral, which is to say, they won’t be here long. It’s hard to keep abreast of what’s in and what’s out, assuming you care about that sort of thing. What will never go out of style, something that will always give your look a lift, is attitude. Attitude and confidence will make even the plainest of looks better than one might think. It’s simple yet intangible, which can make it hard to grasp I realize. Hold your head up high and know that you chose to wear what you did for a reason. Don’t care about what others think. Simple, right? Right.
